But a bad habit, although widespread, can not only deprive you of its flavors, but also expose you to food poisoning. In a Yahoo News article*, health and nutrition specialist Dr. Christian Recchia is clear: not chewing oysters before swallowing them is a very bad idea.

Chew the oyster several times.

When they are fresh and therefore consumed, oysters are alive. If swallowed without chewing, they continue to produce indigestible secretions. “When you put the oyster in your mouth, you have to chew it, crush it and then swallow it. If you don’t chew it, it can continue to secrete secretions in your stomach through stress that will be extremely indigestible. That is why it is important to chew it and kill it,” explains Dr. Christian Recchia to the media. Additionally, each oyster variety offers a unique aromatic palette. When you chew it, these aromas are released and you can better appreciate its rich flavor.

How to properly enjoy an oyster?

Start by removing the oyster from its shell with a fork or knife and then gently suck on it. Take the time to chew it well to release its aromas and promote good digestion. To accompany its naturally salty flavor, you can add a splash of lemon or a touch of vinegar. For fans, a twist of the pepper mill will perfectly enhance its flavors.
