With a second film on the way, the Wicked the train won’t slow down anytime soon – and now John M. Chu‘s hit film impacted ticket sales for the landmark Broadway feature. Not only that, but now the stage production of the musical has presented its first Black Elphaba.
Beginning March 4, musical theater enthusiasts and fans of the film who head to the live Broadway show will witness Lencia Kebede’s debut as Elphaba Thropp in the tale of the Wicked Witch of the West . This casting has been a long time coming and follows Cynthia Erivo revealing version of the character from the Universal Pictures film.
Previously, the cast of the Broadway show Britney Johnson as the first black woman to play Glinda in 2022; she has been an understudy for the role since 2019.
Allie Trimm will join the cast in 2025 opposite Kebede, reprising the role of popular role played by Ariana Grande in the 2024 film. Kebede nails her role as Angelica Schuyler in Lin-Manuel Miranda Hamilton to play Elphaba, while Trimm steps into the role having been a featured replacement for Glinda since 2021.
