The 97th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Although the date of the ceremony remained the same, the CEO of the Academy Bill Kramer and president of the Academy Janet Yang said this year’s show might be different after the Los Angeles wildfires affected thousands of people in the area, including many celebrities.
“We are devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound loss suffered by so many members of our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry and we are committed to remaining united in the face of difficulties,” Kramer and Yang said in a joint statement on January 13, noting that the Oscar voting period had been extended.
“Additionally, as we want to be sensitive to the infrastructure and accommodation needs of the region over the coming weeks, it is imperative that we make some changes to our events calendar, which we believe will benefit from the support of our industry. » » the statement continued. “Our members continue to share the importance of us coming together as a community, and we are committed to taking this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry. However, the voting window for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been extended several times due to the fires. How are the Oscars different from other award shows?

Unlike the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards, which recognize both film and television, the Academy Awards only recognize achievement in cinema.
There will be no musical performances by the nominated artists
In January 2025, news broke that Best Original Song would no longer be awarded during the live broadcast. Additionally, nominees will not perform the singles live.
