In a much-anticipated return to first-class cricket after a decade, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharmathe passage with Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy was unfortunately cut short. Rohit, who has struggled to get fit in Test cricket over the past few months, was dismissed for just 2 runs off 19 balls against Jammu and Kashmir at the Wankhede Stadium on January 23, 2025.

Rohit had joined the Mumbai training camp in a bid to regain his form, especially after his recent challenges in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 where he only managed 31 runs in five innings. Rohit’s return to the national scene ends in a cheap dismissal

Rohit was seen walking on the field with determination, wearing Mumbai’s traditional white cricket attire. The scoreboard at the time of his dismissal showed Mumbai at 12/1, with Rohit coming in to bat after the fall of an early wicket.

Facing the thrower Umar Nazir MirRohit tried to play a defensive shot, but an edge from his bat found its way to the slips, where he was caught by Paras Dograending his brief return to the Ranji Trophy. This dismissal is a classic example of how a simple mistake can change the course of a batter’s innings, especially in the difficult conditions of domestic cricket.

Hopes of a comeback dashed in Ranji Trophy clash

The match against Jammu and Kashmir was important as it was part of the second phase of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, with Mumbai gearing up for their sixth round match. Rohit’s willingness to train with the Mumbai team under head coach Omkar Salvi had raised hopes among fans and cricket experts that this could be the platform for the captain to finding his touch in cricket in the longer format. But the result was far from what was hoped for.
